A student culinary team from Apex High (@WCPSS) cooked their way to 1st place in the #2019NCJrChef Competition. With their Grilled Chicken Street Tacos with Mango Salsa, the team won a trophy and a ticket to Kentucky to represent NC in the Southeast Jr. Chef Competition.
The Hayesville High “Category 4” team (Clay County Schools) won 2nd with their Greek Chic Pasta Bake. Parkwood High (Union County Public Schools) won 3rd with their Southern Fried Chicken Lo Mein.
All 8 finalist teams impressed the judges and showcased their skills winning gold or silver medals. The 1st place team received gold medals. The 2nd and 3rd place teams along with finalist teams from Ashe County High School, Asheville High (Asheville City Schools), East Chapel Hill High (Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools), Hayesville High “Meatball Boiz”, and Hobbton High (Sampson County Schools) won silver medals.
For the competition, students were challenged to work with their FCS teachers and School Nutrition administrators to develop a creative school lunch entrée recipe that meets federal nutrition standards, includes at least 2 NC-grown products and 1 USDA Foods item, is replicable by School Nutrition Programs, and passes student taste tests.
